Riyadh Metro is getting 94 more trains, taking the fleet to 277
The Royal Commission for Riyadh City has signed contracts for 94 new metro trains, which will more than double the daily capacity of the Red and Yellow lines.
The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has signed contracts for 94 new trains for the Riyadh Metro, its chief executive Ibrahim Al-Sultan said at the government press conference this week. The fleet will grow from 183 trains to 277.
The commission gave the expected daily capacity per line. The Blue Line goes from about 340,000 passengers a day to about 533,000, the Red Line from 154,000 to 370,000, and the Yellow Line from 133,000 to more than 288,000. A delivery date for the new trains was not given.
Work is also under way to extend the Red Line from King Saud University to Diriyah, with five new stations: two serving the university and its Medical City, and three in Diriyah. No opening date has been announced. The commission said public transport in the city has carried nearly 500 million passengers so far, more than 300 million of them on the Metro.
For riders, the change is more trains on the same lines, so less crowding at peak hours, above all on the Red and Yellow lines, once the new trains arrive. Fares and the Darb card stay as they are for now, and nothing changes on your daily trip until the commission announces the new trains are in service.
